Make Labour Weekend A Quiet Riot At Nelson Arts Festival
Spring is in the air and Nelson Arts Festival is about to take over Whakatū, with Labour Weekend packed with theatre, live music, books, dance, film, art, free events and plenty of reasons to get out and make a long weekend of it.
Running from 22 October – 1 November, Aotearoa’s longest-running annual regional arts festival returns for its 32nd year, with JOY as an act of collective hope at the heart of the programme and an invitation to join its very own “quiet riot”.
“For us, a ‘quiet riot’ is about coming together and choosing joy. It might be a brilliant show, a conversation that stays with you, dancing with strangers or gathering on the beach at sunset. Labour Weekend is full of those moments, and we’d love people to come out and get amongst it,” says Artistic Director Janelle Bish.

After four successful years building the New Zealand Fishing, Hunting & 4X4 Expo in Rotorua, we are bringing the experience to the top of the South Island. The first Nelson edition of the Expo will take place from 16 to 18 October 2026, marking an exciting new chapter as the event continues to grow across New Zealand.
Developed from the strong foundation established in Rotorua, the Nelson Expo will deliver the same high energy atmosphere with new activations, local flavour, and plenty of action for outdoor enthusiasts. Cherry Blossom Festival – This Weekend
This spring, Nelson will celebrate a momentous milestone with our sister city, Miyazu, marking 50 years of friendship, cultural exchange and connection between the two cities.
Nelson Miyazu Sister City Association Chairperson Linley Smith says it is wonderful to be celebrating 50 years of the sister city relationship.
“This friendship was started due to the similarities between the Nelson Boulder Bank and the Miyazu sand bridge Amanohashidate and has endured over the years thanks to successive mayors from both cities and the dedicated sister city association members.”
Five decades later, that friendship has grown into one of New Zealand’s longest-standing sister city relationships. The milestone will be celebrated at this year’s Cherry Blossom Festival at Miyazu Garden on Saturday 26 September, from 11am to 3pm.
